Burial Related Benefits

The Veterans Administration provides various burial benefits for Veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces. Scroll down to read more about various benefits and allowances as well as information about how to submit benefit claims.

Documentation Requirements

To receive burial related benefits and compensation, you must provide the following:

Funeral Receipt (Zero Balance, or Paid in Full)

Death Certificate

Burial Related Benefits & Allowances

Burial Allowance

A burial allowance may be paid to help offset expenses of the Veteran’s funeral and burial.

The allowance is payable for Veterans who:

Died of a service-connected disability

Were in receipt of compensation of pension, or retired pay in lieu thereof

Died in a VA facility

Plot Allowance

A plot allowance may be paid for Veterans not buried in a national cemetery.

The allowance may be payable for Veterans who:

Were discharged for disability incurred or aggravated in the line of duty

Were in receipt of compensation pension, or retired pay in lieu thereof

Died in a VA facility

National Cemetery

Most Veterans, their spouses, and dependent children are eligible for burial in one of VA’s National Cemeteries at no cost to the family.

Many states have Veterans cemeteries, built with VA grants, with similar benefits.

Headstone or Marker

VA provides a headstone or marker for Veterans buried at any cemetery worldwide.

Flag

An American flag is provided to drape the casket or accompany the urn of an eligible Veteran. The flag is presented to the Veteran’s next of kin upon burial.

Presidential Memorial Certificates

Family and other loved ones may request these personalized certificates.

Non-Service Connected Death

The allowance for a Non-Service Connected Death has a 2 year time limit.

The allowance may be payable for, or when a Veteran:

$300 toward funeral expenses, if plot is not used an additional $300 plus cost of transportation

Was in receipt of monetary benefits from the VA

Receiving retired pay in lieu of compensation

Died at VA Medical Center

Died at VA contracted nursing home

Died while traveling, under proper authorization and at VA expense, to or from a specified place for the purpose of examination or care

Had claim pending, and was awarded after death

The Veteran’s body is being held at State or political subdivision of State, there is no next of kin to claim body AND served during war time or discharged for a disability

Service Connected Death

The allowance for a Service Connected Death has no time limit.

The allowance may be payable for, or when a Veteran’s:

$2000 toward Funeral Expenses

Cause of death was service related

Service connected condition was either primary cause of death or a contributory cause of death

Associated funeral expenses are incurred by the veteran and /or family.

The family has to pay for the complete cost of the funeral and let their funeral director know that they wish to use the VA National Cemetery for final disposition (The burial). The VA will reimburse partial cost, up to $2000.
