COMPTON, Calif. (October 2026) — When U.S. Army veteran Jessie Brosius met Michael Salas at Compton Courthouse’s Veterans Treatment Court, he was living with disabling conditions and had yet to receive benefits that could help him manage their impact on his life. Salas, a veteran services representative II with the Los Angeles County Department of Military and Veterans Affairs’ (MVA) Justice Involved Division, helped Brosius obtain a 100% service-connected disability rating in a matter of months, giving him financial stability and room to plan for his future.
Veterans Treatment Court combines court supervision with individualized treatment and veteran-focused services for eligible participants. Veterans work toward court requirements while connecting with treatment, benefits and other resources that support their progress.
During their initial conversation, Salas introduced Brosius to the services available through MVA. Salas said Brosius appeared discouraged and needed a stronger support system.
Salas helped him file his claim, followed up with him in court, facilitated transportation and advocated on his behalf.
“The veteran’s confidence really took a shine as we connected more frequently, and when he was awarded, he was really appreciative and happy,” Salas said.
The approved claim included retroactive benefits dating back to May. Brosius said the decision left him feeling “on top of the world.”
Salas said Brosius told him he had not received help like this before.
“It’s been helping me out a lot,” Brosius said.
Brosius said the benefits may finally make it possible for him to attend a university, potentially to study physical therapy.
Veterans in Los Angeles County who need guidance with benefits or services can contact MVA for assistance accessing earned benefits and connecting with community resources.
