The County Department of Military and Veterans Affairs was established as “The Department of Patriotic Hall.”
It was founded by members of the Grand Army of the Republic (Civil War veterans’ organization), Spanish-American War Veterans, and others.
The department initially occupied a remodeled two-story church named “Hall of Victory.”
Mr. W. H. Daubenspeck generously donated land at 1816 S. Figueroa Street, Los Angeles, CA 90015.
The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors dedicated the building constructed on this land to Patriotic Hall.
The Hall was originally built for veterans who served in the Grand Army of the Republic during the Civil War, as well as those who served in the Native American wars, Spanish-American War and World War I.
The County of Los Angeles Board of Supervisors renamed the department from the Department of Patriotic Hall to the County of Los Angeles Department of Military and Veterans Affairs.
The building was renamed “Bob Hope Patriotic Hall” in honor of Bob Hope, who was named an honorary veteran of the United States Armed Forces for his decades of service to the USO.
